Ghaus (Gaus or Gaos) ~

A Ghau is a Buddhist prayer boxes from Nepal. It is used to hold a prayer or mantra, an image of one's personal deity, perhaps a scrap of silk cloth given as a merit. Clamshell style Ghaus are hinged on the top and open from the bottom. Fitted back Ghau Styles have a friction-fit back which can be pried open with your fingernails. Traditional style Ghaus are ostensibly friction fit, but usually tied with string to keep the two sides together. Tiger Tiger ghaus are always sent in a small cloth bag to protect them.

(As you can see from this one example, there is no clear concensus on the English spelling of Tibetan words.)
